Our plane was towed in from parking before it was ready for boarding.

Boarding began with zone 1 which is for Royal Laurel + Star Alliance Gold members at which point I boarded.

TPE-LAX
Boeing 777-300ER
July 4th, 2019

I boarded through door L2 and turned right into the mini-rear Royal Laurel Cabin and then into the Premium economy cabin. I was in seat 22K. Below is 24K. My neighbor was already at his seat so I didn’t want to take a picture with him already in the seat.

Essentially the seat will be exactly the same difference being the window position probably but that’s it.

Seat

The seat cushion was decent for the flight and the back padding was also alright and better because it was curved to the shape of your back after much usage.

seat

In between the seats is a central console for storing items if need be.

There was also an extendable footrest. So for rows 21-27 (non-bulkhead rows), there’s a footrest. However, if you can manage to get the bulkhead row 20, which I reviewed on my inbound flight, you get a full leg rest.

So we were given a menu. Normal, right? No, not today. I was traveling during the EVA strike period. So we were given menu as the drinks side of it was still intact, however the food items on the menu wouldn’t be served and only one choice of meal not even on the menu was served. This wasn’t ideal or good, but EVA had to deal with the constraints.

And here’s the amenity kit and its contents.

Eventually we began pushback and taxiied to runway 23L for takeoff.

We had a long takeoff roll and a smooth climb out of Taipei.

I got some nice views of the airport and Taipei as I was flying out.

A short while after the seat belt was turned off, the crew brought around refreshing towels for all. Even though they are packaged, I like them. They are real towels, chilled, and nicely scented just the way I like them.

towel

Not too long after, food was already served.

dinner unboxed

Now here’s dinner. Nothing on this tray is from the menu. Unless you ordered a special meal, everyone only had one choice of meal. Everything on the menu looked better than what was offered here, but I can’t blame the airline, they can only do so much. It’s still a nice offering.

dinner

I actually didn’t even know what appetizer was. On the sides, we had cucumbers and apples for sure, but I wasn’t sure what the substance was I was eating. Originally I thought it was some kind of ham or salami but even that turned to be false. It was still nice, chilled, and refreshing.

salad

The main course was fish in some sauce with rice and veggies. The fish was dry and overcooked which I’m never mad about since proteins in a plane oven are always hard, the sauce was some kind of soy-based sauce and it was ok as well. The rice and veggies were standard. Nothing bad, but nothing incredible about it either. This main course was overall just ok.

main course

What I do like about EVA is that they give a bigger salad than any other airline I know in premium economy/economy class. Most airlines will give you lesser food but give you more unhealthy/ heavy carbs with sauce food to make you full faster and longer, but EVA doesn’t do that.

The salad with olive oil was nice and refreshing along with that extra tangy flavor you get from balsamic vinegar.

salad

The dessert was some kind of chocolate cake with frosting and fruit jelly. It was nice and tasty.

cake

And then there were fruits.

They also offered apple juice with the meal which was an interesting addon. But I didn’t have any.

apple juice

Overall the meal wasn’t anything like what I know EVA for, but given the strike I think it’s fair to give them some slack. I thought the portion was still normal size and great in spite of reduced meal options on board.

At this point, I was exhausted, so I fell asleep. There wasn’t much service after this. The crew just ensured everyone shut their lights as it would be daylight time very soon.

Good morning!

About 8 hours into the flight, the flight crew came around with a snack basket that had a variety of general snacks, but it also had this ham and cheese croissant which I had.

croissant

Around 2.5 hours to landing, another round of towels began, signifying the start of the last meal service.

Breakfast was served right after with one choice: Omelette

breakfast

It’s funny this meal was breakfast yet we were approaching evening on the west coast.

breakfast

The appetizer was some kind of cucumber with cream cheese with ham dish. The cucumber was frozen. It wasn’t really cold, it was frozen. You can even see the ice in the photo. The cream cheese and ham were both decent.

For the main course, we have an omelette with hash browns veggies and a sauce with sausage. The omelette was actually light and fluffy, the potatoes were lightly salted and had great texture, the veggies were alright, and the sausage was pretty tasteless so I didn’t eat too much of it.

Breakfast

There was bread and butter, though I didn’t bother with it as the rest of the meal was quite filling.

bread and butter

Dessert was a kind of pineapple jelly and it was decently flavorful.

The crew cleared my tray within minutes of finishing. From here it was all views for the rest of the flight, as we flew into the evening.

They also came around with candies prior to arrival.

And now the skies were actually worthwhile and at this point we had already crossed over into California. I may be biased being from LA, but in my mind, you can’t beat a good SoCal sunset.

Eventually we began descent into LAX as well

Now special about tonight, it was 4th of July, so I was treated to an amazing display of fireworks from sky-high. You can see the youtube video for all those.

Overall, this was another good flight with EVA. Sure, they had strike which affected a lot of their service aspects, but they still had a great effort put in and I am happy about that. Now the strike is over, so it’s business as usual excellent EVA Air service.

As another wonderful trip wraps up, thanks to all for following along with me on this insane ride. I’ve had so much fun writing up all these trip reports and flying these flights. Hope to do this again this winter, but that’s for another time. Until then, cheers!
