After spending quality time at United’s Polaris lounge here in LAX, it was time for my flight.

United boards in groups, and if you are flying Polaris business class, you will be boarding in group 1. The only exception to this, is if you are a United Global Services or 1K member, then you get to be a part of the pre-boarding zoo.

As I boarded, I made my way back to my seat 7A. This is one of my more favorite seats on this aircraft.

seat 7A

Waiting for me at my seat was a welcome note from the purser thanking me for being 1K with United. This was a nice touch.

welcome note

Waiting at each seat you’ll find the usual stack of Polaris amenities, which are pretty much as good as it gets in business class. You get a gel cooling pillow, a mattress topper, a duvet, and a blanket. You really can’t find bedding better than this on any other airline.

Polaris amenities

The screen is nice and sizable and quite responsive.

seat

Below the TV screen is a mini storage space. I’ve flown in this seat dozens of times, and to this day, I have no clue what I’m supposed to use this for. I really sometimes just keep my phone or passport there for a bit but there’s nothing else I can use that for.

storage

Below the TV and the storage is a foot cubby. When your bed transitions into flatbed mode, this is where you’ll find comfort. For some people, this can get narrow so I recommend trying to get a seat in rows 1 or 9 as they are bulkhead rows and have larger foot cubbies.

There’s a center console off to your side where you can place things, including drinks and other smaller items.

side console

The seat also has a side storage compartment and inside of that you’ll find a pair of headphones and a water bottle waiting for you.

Below the storage compartment is a universal charger and the remote. Given how responsive the screen itself was, I really didn’t need to use this remote at all.

remote

The seat also has an armrest so you can rest your arm on something besides your own lap.

armest

There’s also a coat hook. The neat thing with this is that the crew will come by and take any garments you place on this and put it away in the coat hangar. They’ll return it to you during your flight’s descent.

The crew also came around with pre-departure beverages of water and sparkling wine, and I certainly had to settle for the latter.

Eventually wer pushed back and made our way to runway 25R, which is the main departure runway on the south side of the airport.

And now that we are up in the air, its time to make use of the polaris slippers that you get.

slippers

Your shoes go right underneat the footrest, and they’ll be out of your way until the end of the flight.

Once we were up, the purser for our flight, Lyne, also came around and thanked everyone with their respective statuses, which was a nice touch on her part.

The menu was available at our seat when we were on the ground, but here’s a proper another look at it now.

drinks

To start the service, the crew came around with hot towels. Now let me just say, these hot towels USUALLY carry no scent. It’s just hot and that’s fine. My particular towel smelled absolutely rancid and I have no clue why. That was definitely something.

When you push in on the tray table, it pops out towards you and you can un-fold it and have it ready for service.

tray table

The service opens with warm nuts and your choice of drink for which I went with a glass of cab and some sparkling water.

first course

Once that was done, it was time for the mains. So United doesn’t do this anymore thankfully, but at this time they served the appetizers and main course at the same time. That’s not a big deal, just not ideal since the main course gets a little cooler while I’m still enjoying the appetizer.

meal

The shrimp was decent. It was served chilled and had a nice crisp but nothing too special.

shrimp

United usually does pretty well with pretzel rolls and garlic bread. It’s hard to say no to either.

bread

The salad was pretty average, and it was served with a balsamic vinegar dressing.

salad

If your flight doesnt have short rib on the menu, it’s not United, simple as that. The shrort rim was honestly decently cooked for a plane meal and was reasonably flavorful too.

short rib

Our purser Lyne came around and checked if we needed refills throughout the meal. Once I was done, my tray was cleared and she came around with the dessert cart for everyone.

I went with ice cream and a cheese plate. So the ice cream is just a bowl of vanilla ice cream and you choose the toppings that they add onto your ice cream. Usually the choices are chocolate sauce, caramel, whipped cream, chocolate chips, nuts, cherry, and I’ve sometimes even seen sprinkles. But in my case I took the first 5.

ice cream sundae

I also went for a cheese plate.

And of course, I had to have a glass of port wine to finish the meal.

The snack galley was already set up for mid flight snacks and the steel bowl you see is where fruits will eventually go.

mid flight snacks

I chose the left side because of the sunset and sunrise views. It was getting darker outside at this point, but the views were great.

views

Given that this flight was in the summer, the light never faded fully. Rather, we were in a constant state of twilight until sunrise time came around.

United’s Polaris bedding is the best in business class. There was a mattress topper, a blanket, a thick pillow, and a gel cooling pillow. Nobody else has this in business class, and this bedding stack gives you the best chance at getting a good rest.

Amenity Kits were provided for the flight.

Amenity Kit

They were simple, but had things like eyemasks, socks, chapstick, and other essentials for a 10 hour flight.

After getting some good rest, I woke up and the crew brought around hot towels again to prepare us for breakfast. This towel smelled fine, as expected, compared to the previous one.

For breakfast, I had the egg bites.

Breakfast

The egg bites were nice and the tomato sauce was tasty. The savory breakfast on United is generally good.

The fruits were refreshing.

The croissant was fine as well.

I would generally recommend skipping the yogurt since the flavored yogurts are super full of sugar.

Eventually we began  our descent into London.

After enjoying some excellent views of central London, we made it onto the ground in Heathrow on a beautiful day.

United Polaris Business Class is a product where you can be sure what you will expect out of it. The food can be a hit or miss, the crew can be a hit or a miss, but you will get good rest, you will have a reliable aircraft, and you will overall have a good flight. I never make the food a highlight of business class. While it’s nice to have good food, the amenities, seat, and bedding is the most important aspect. United definitely delivers on that.
