Nuuk Airport’s departure area is essentially a single room with duty free containing all kinds of alcohol.
There’s essentiallly 6 gates. 1-4 don’t require passport control, whereas 5 and 6 do. Naturally, our gate was one of those. Though to be honest, they are so cramped, and this airport doesn’t ever see enough traffic to see both gates 5 and 6 used at the same time, so I couldnt tell you which gate was ours.

Supposedly we had gate 6, but it very well could’ve been gate 5.

Once we began boarding, it was a beautiful walk out onto the tarmac towards our aircraft.

This airport has no jet bridges, so boarding was carried out by stairs.

My seat was 7F which is an economy plus seat in the very front of the cabin.

At every seat was a pillow and blanket.

People generally don’t like bulkhead seats, but I’d say on the 737 MAX 8, it’s totally worth it. Seat 7F affords great views outside.

It also has immense leg space and bulkhead cutouts which means your personal item can go directly under your seat and you can get up without making your neighbors get up.

Eventually we pushed back and taxiied on the runway to the end and did an assisted U-turn onto the runway. The airport is on an elevated platform, so the views were incredible.

Eventually, we began our takeoff roll out of Nuuk, and the views were great from the right side of the aircraft.
We left Greenland in the distance and flew out into the Labrador Sea, making our way towards Newfoundland & Labrador. The views were amazing and the ice sheets were spectacular.
Eventually it was lunch time, even though our flight departed at 9am. The crew offered us a drink choice and I went with water and white wine…as one does at 10am.

Our choices were muskox or pasta. You are telling me United Airlines catered Greenlandic muskox out of Nuuk? The choice was obvious.

It was a pretty colorful plate of food if you ask me.

The muskox was mixed in a cream sauce with vegetables and below it was a bed of pasta of some kind. It was honestly pretty good I was quite pleased.

There was a pretty basic side salad provided.

We also got a dill sauce to go with the salad, which was pretty good. There were also crackers and a chocolate wafer which are both very normal offerings from a certain Icelandic company I can’t recall the name for.

One cool fact about the meal that not many people will tell you is that it was actually catered from a local restaurant in Nuuk. So Nuuk airport itself does not have catering services. So Air Greenland for instance gets its food catered in from its daily Copenhagen flight and that basically feeds the entire network. In United’s case, they don’t get this food. They instead are getting their meals made by a local restaurant in Nuuk and an Icelandic catering partner.
Eventually i went and hung out up front for a little bit with Patrick Quayle from United airlines and a few others, and a crew member brought me a sweet wine of sorts which was also catered locally in Nuuk. While it was certainly unique, it was a bit too sweet for my liking.

But the crew then refilled my glass with some more white wine and let me take that glass back to my seat.
On this 4 hour, 15 minute flight, there was a second meal service. Don’t worry, you don’t get real glassware in economy, this was just what i had brought up from the forward cabin.
But anyways, the service included your choice of drink and a chocolate muffin.

At this point we were treading along the eastern seaboard on our way into Newark.
We lined up and had our final approach onto runway 22L.
Overall, this was one of the better flights I’ve had with United. Undeniably there was excitement about the inaugural on this route, as most passengers had flown that a few days prior to this one. But the local meals on board were great, the views were awesome, the crew were great, and the seat & amenities were comfortable. United’s new Greenland route is undoubtetly the most unique and anticipated route of the year.
However this flight is definitely pricey. a 4 hour flight being north of $800 in economy is not normal. Can United sustain this route beyond this season? We’ll have to find our soon enough from United whether this route will make it back to next season.
But for what it was, and the time I had, I was very pleased with the flight.
